Unfortunately, that dive is sometimes brought to a screeching halt by that one sure-fire killer of flow – a character introduced with a name so ridiculous that you just have to rewind and make sure they said it right. Yes, that’s our focus for this list. We’re looking at the strangest, funniest, and downright weirdest character names from all of anime. Prepare yourself for some childish silliness, a few puns, and more than a handful of innuendos (yes that was deliberate!).
15. Nice Holystone
Anime: Baccano! I’ll be honest: This spot was a bit of a coin flip between Nice Holystone and her boyfriend, the remarkably named Jacuzzi Splot. Two things swung it in favor of our girl, Nice. One, having a name that sounds like someone’s complementing the new holy stone you just bought cracks me up to no end. And two: imagine these two getting married. Suddenly you’ve got the small chance of a Jacuzzi Holystone, which is somehow greater than the sum of its parts. Or… Nice Splot. I think you can see why Nice Holystone made it onto the list in the end.
14. Dick Saucer
Anime: Dragon Half Stop giggling in the back there! Other than his name, Mr. Saucer has everything going for him. The voice of an angel, the fighting ability of a warrior, everyone lining up to adore and admire him. What more could you really want? Other than maybe slightly more thoughtful parents, given his first and last name combination… Though to his credit, he has avoided the snafu of naming his special attack something even more risqué – in the English dub, it’s called “The Mighty Saucer Special”. I think there was a 50% chance that could have been a lot worse.
13. Fatman Big
Anime: Combat Mecha Xabungle Fatman Big is very much a side character, but no less endearing to me by his fantastic name. And he isn’t actually even that fat. Or even that big! It reminds me of those ironic gangster nicknames, like “Tiny” for a huge hulk of a man, or “Three-Finger Joey” for a man who inexplicably seems to have no lack of fingers whatsoever. Maybe it’s all the giant mechs making him look small by comparison. But what Fatman Big lacks in expected size, he more than makes up for in having a fantastically silly name.
12. Spooky Boogie
Anime: Psycho-Pass Alright, I know this name is an avatar name in the world of Psycho-Pass, and therefore can be held to a little less scrutiny on being a given name. But come on, you’re telling me that every time someone in the show said “Spooky Boogie” that it didn’t elicit some laughter? I know it did for me! Real name “Shoko Sugawara”, Spooky Boogie may not have the rudest sounding or most punny name on this list. But as far as being brilliantly silly goes, it has that wrapped up.
11. Bring Stabity
Anime: Mobile Suit Gundam 00 I promised myself when I sat down to write this list that I wouldn’t just make it all Mobile Suit Gundam characters. And let me tell you, it was very hard to keep that promise. In the end I settled for including just a few – and here’s the first of my favorites: Bring Stabity. Did the author intend for his last name to be “Stability”, perhaps? Given his role as an Innovade, that would make a lot more sense thematically. However, he’s unfortunately not “Stability” by name and nature. And that’s why he has a spot on this list. Because as far as I remember, he doesn’t stab anyone either.
10. Anubituf
Anime: Simoun My gut instinct to seeing and hearing this name is to say “gesundheit”. Doesn’t it just look like a sneeze written down? One of those sneezes where someone shakes their head during it? But that’s not why Anubituf made it onto this list, just so you know. The real reason is the smushing together of seemingly random letters that screams to me, “I’m not sure how to come up with a made up name in a fantasy setting”. The point I’m making is, obviously, this is a very strange name.
9. Bibidi, Babidi, Buu
Anime: Dragon Ball “Wait a minute, that’s three characters – you’re cheating!” I hear you shout. And yes, I feel like the true scope of how silly these names are really needs the context of all three. While the Buu saga was known for its more than fair share of silliness, it’s the names of these three put together (referencing a classic song I’m sure you’re all familiar with) that really take the cake. So when Bibidi and his duplicate/”son” Babidi (even typing this out is making me chuckle to myself) awaken Buu from his eons-long sleep, you just know someone somewhere was massively pleased with the decisions they made in naming them.
8. Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu
Anime: My Hero Academia Think you’ve got a strange name? Try having that name four times! Yes, it’s My Hero Academia, but with a twist. There are plenty of hero names, aliases, and even nicknames from the show I could have chosen for being silly sounding. But Tetsutetsu (let’s call him TT for short from here to save us some time) has the ignoble honor of this being his actual, real name. The word “Tetsu” actually has a few meanings, but on translation he becomes the slightly less silly but still very strange Ironiron Ironiron. Did his parents not consider Benjamin or something?
7. Bluesy Fluesy
Anime: Taboo Tattoo Here’s a pick from another anime I could have written this entire list about (but which also contains the excellently cool Brad Blackstone). Taboo Tattoo brings us the almost childishly-named Bluesy Fluesy. It sounds like a nickname you’d give to someone you don’t particularly like, to make fun of them in some way. That’s not forgetting that “Fluesy” has a sound-a-like word that doesn’t have great connotations either! In fact, I’m having trouble deciding whether her alias moniker of “Monday Rabbit” is better or worse. While the action in this anime is definitely awesome, this isn’t a name that reaches that height.
6. Bork Cry
Anime: Mobile Suit Gundam Series No, it’s not the Swedish Chef’s special attack – this is the actual name of an actual character. Bless the Gundam series, really. There are so many of these almost randomly generated names scattered all the way through it, and I don’t think any of them made me laugh as hard as Bork Cry on first hearing it. Though I’m going to hope my editor forgives me for slightly cheating here – yes, this character features in two video games based on the Gundam series of anime. But in my defense; come on, look at that name! It belongs here!
5. Quattro Bajeena
Anime: Mobile Suit Gundam Okay, this is the last Gundam one I pinky promise! Now, fans of the series will know that this is not a given name. Rather this moniker belongs to Char Aznable, the on again/off again antagonist of the series. I mean, it’s not like Char Aznable is great either. I’ve given this one distinction over the others primarily because of it being an alias, rather than a real name. Char could have picked anything. Literally anything in the world. He chose Quattro Bajeena. And so we immortalize him here for his sins.
4. Welldone the Pussyhand
Anime: Mardock Scramble You know that saying, “X by name, X by nature”? Let’s just say that Mr. W Pussyhand isn’t named for his love of cats. In this world of cyborgs, assassins, and body-snatchers, Welldone has gone one step beyond even that insanity and has had a… shall we say “sensitive area” grafted onto his hand. Which makes me think – did he get the nickname afterward? Or was this the world’s most bizarre case of nominative determinism?
3. Rururaruri Rurararirararururirirari Rirararururararururararirari
Anime: Myriad Colors Phantom World I’m straight up not even attempting to type that out again. I’ll be calling her “Ruru” like she is in the show if it’s all the same to you! And you know, there isn’t a huge amount of this harem anime that’s all that unusual outside of this wonderful mouthful of a name (besides the fact it’s a harem anime). It comes out of nowhere in the second episode, and isn’t actually ever said in full again! If you want to hear it said, there’s a video on YouTube which frankly makes me think that the voice actor made it up on the spot, and then the animation team just threw their hands up and said “sure, let’s go with that.”
2. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
Anime: Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo There is not a single thing in this anime that isn’t bafflingly silly to the nth degree – and I love it. We’d run out of article to list all the funny here, so thankfully we can just focus on the lead character – who by his own admission, will only let people call him Bo-bobo for short. Because he apparently hates anyone not thinking he’s absolutely insane. Though to be fair, just to look at him you’d think twice about telling him how daft his name is. Especially when his nose-hair turns into a fist and clobbers you. Seriously, watch this anime.
1. Jugem Jugem
Anime: Gintama At the risk of looking like I’m padding my writing, I’m only going to post the monkey Jugem Jugem’s full name once, with translation, and let its glorious weirdness speak entirely for itself. Ready? It’s full name is “Jugemu Jugemu Unko Nageki Ototoi no Shin-chan no Pantsu Shinpachi no Jinsei Barumunku Fezarion Aizakku Shunaidaa Sanbun no Ichi no Junjou na Kanjou no Nokotta Sanbun no Ni wa Sakamuke ga Kininaru Kanjou Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru you de Shiranai no wo Boku wa Shitteiru Rusu Surume Medaka Kazunoko Koedame Medaka… Kono Medaka wa Sakki to Chigau Yatsu Dakara Ikeno Medaka no Hou Dakara Raayu Yuuteimiyaoukimukou Pepepepepepepepepepepepe Bichiguso Maru”. Translation? “Jugem Jugem Shit-Tossing of Shin-chan’s Two-Day-Old Underwear of Shinpachi’s Life Balmung Fezalion Issac Schneider 1/3 Pure Love 2/3 Hangnail Anxiety Betrayal Knows My Name Or Does It Really Ignore Calls Squid Dogfish Halibut Trout-Cod Dogfish… This Is A Different Dogfish, I’m Talking About The Dogfish Shark Kaluga Angler Ray Yuuteimiyaoukimukou Pepepepepepepepepepepepe Runny Diarrhea”. Now tell me that doesn’t deserve to be at number one.
